Q&A with Joy
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
My favorite animated movie is The Lion King.
What is your favorite children's book?
My favorite children’s book series is Diary of a Wimpy Kid because it is funny, easy to read, and relatable to real-life situations that kids face. It is also my kids’ favorite series to read.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
Dolls, because I loved styling dolls' hair.
Who is your greatest inspiration?
My mother Glady, she commands respect and she is very selfless.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
My hobbies and interests outside of work include styling my hair and my kids’ hair, singing and dancing with my daughter, traveling with my family and making memories, and playing soccer with them.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
I am inspired to work in pediatrics because of my love for children and adolescents. I am fascinated by their creativity, ideas, and unique ways of seeing the world. It is truly rewarding to watch them grow, develop, and transition into adulthood. I chose to focus on the pediatric population because I believe in the phrase “catch them young.” By working with children early, I have the opportunity to help them build healthy habits, encourage wellness, and support them in becoming healthy adults.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I have the ability to connect with children at their developmental level. and be nonjudgemental.
I take the time to listen to their ideas, concerns, and even their stories. I also have the patience and flexibility needed to engage children who may be fearful or hesitant during visits.
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
I accommodate patients with special needs by individualizing my approach, I start by creating a calm, supportive environment that reduces anxiety.
Family involvement is another key part of my approach
I rely on my training in developmental and behavioral health to adjust communication strategies. Which includes using simple language, visual aids, or interactive tools to explain care. For children with sensory sensitivities, I adapt by lowering noise levels, or avoiding unnecessary physical touch until they feel comfortable.
I seek out continuing education on autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and other developmental conditions to remain current on evidence-based practices.
