Q&A with Jaeyoun

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

My favorite animated characters are the Minions.

What is your favorite children's book?

My favorite children’s book is The Color Monster: A Story About Emotions.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

My favorite childhood place was the playground.

Who is your greatest inspiration?

My greatest inspiration is my family, particularly my experience raising children with special needs within a multicultural background. This has deeply influenced my perspective, strengthening my ability to navigate challenges, communicate across differences, and support others with empathy and respect. It continues to motivate me to create meaningful impact in both my personal and professional life.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

My hobbies and interests outside of work include spending time with my family.

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

I was drawn to pediatrics early in my career, but becoming a parent—especially raising children with special needs—deepened my understanding of the impact providers have on both children and their families. It strengthened my commitment to compassionate, family-centered care.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

My diverse clinical background across NICU, PICU, pediatric emergency, general pediatrics, and psychiatric care, along with my experience as a clinical adjunct faculty, allows me to approach care from multiple perspectives. Raising a child with special needs and engaging in community advocacy have further strengthened my empathy and cultural awareness.

I build rapport by being present, listening without judgment, and tailoring my communication to each family’s needs. As I continue my training in psychiatric NP, I aim to provide more comprehensive, holistic support to both children and their families.”

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

Yes. I have a child with special needs at home, which has shaped how I care for my patients. I treat each child like my own—taking time, adjusting to their needs, and putting myself in the family’s shoes
