Does your health plan require an assigned PCP (for example, an HMO)? If yes, verify that an MD Kids Pediatrics provider is your assigned PCP. Generally, this will populate on your Member ID card.

Yes! As a patient of MD Kids Pediatrics, your child can be seen at any of our 59 locations. For instance, if you’re traveling with your child and they get sick, you can schedule an appointment at a different office. However, we do recommend that you select one office as your home office where your primary provider is based.
We do! Walk-ins will be scheduled for the next available appointment, which could be at a different location or the following morning if the visit is not a medical emergency. That’s why we encourage scheduling an appointment in advance whenever possible.
Existing patients can schedule a well or sick visit online with exceptions below*. It’s important to note that you must enter your child’s name exactly how it appears in our records to access online scheduling (no nicknames or alternate names).

You can schedule well visits up to one year ahead of time.
We strive to get you in and out of the office as quickly as possible without ever compromising your child’s care. If it’s a particularly busy day with a lot of sick visits or emergencies, you may have to wait longer. If you are not committed to a particular provider, you can request an appointment with the first available provider instead. Please note that the best time to schedule your visit is first thing in the morning or first thing after lunch.

Sick care
Yes, all sick children will be seen on the same day if possible. Every attempt will be made to schedule you with your primary provider at your home office or another provider at that location. If there is no availability, you may be offered another location, an after-hours appointment for the same day, or a virtual telehealth visit.
If your child is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911. Otherwise, if your child is sick, always call your home office first. An agent will ask questions to determine the urgency of the problem and connect you with an appropriate resource. Many issues can be resolved by home care or a telehealth visit. For more urgent issues after regular business hours, you may be directed to the nearest MD Kids Pediatrics after-hours location for an in-person examination. (Please note that you may incur additional fees for an after-hours visit.)
MD Kids Pediatrics provides phone coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If your call is related to a medical issue that requires urgent treatment, you will be routed to a pediatric nurse who will answer your questions or connect you with an appropriate resource. You can also schedule a virtual telehealth visit via the KidzDocNow app.
Gather the following details (consider writing them down so you remember everything!):

What you are concerned about
Your child’s state of alertness (if you are concerned about lack of responsiveness, call 911 for emergency care)
How long the problem has been going on and if it is getting worse
What you have done about your child’s illness
Your child’s temperature

Yes, all MD Kids Pediatrics offices have separate sick and well waiting areas. Please comply with the posted signs and sit in the appropriate section.
Our providers are on staff at major hospitals in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio. Please see our Hospital Affiliations page for more details.
If your child is sick and admitted to a hospital where our providers have been granted privileges, one of our affiliated hospitalists will visit your child and keep us informed of their condition. A post-hospital visit with your pediatrician will usually be scheduled after your child is discharged. Please remember to bring the discharge summary to this follow-up visit.
Well visits
Unless your child is sick, children over age 3 are generally seen once a year for their annual check-up. The easiest way to remember is to always schedule a visit around their birthday.
During your children’s first year of life, well visits are scheduled 3 days after birth and at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months.
During your child’s second year, well visits are scheduled at 15 months, 18 months, and 24 months.
During your child’s third year, well visits are scheduled at 30 months and 36 months.
In the interest of continuity of care, we encourage you to schedule well visits with your child’s primary provider. If your child is sick, we cannot guarantee your provider will be available or on the schedule that day.
Combined care visit
A well-child visit (also called a preventive or annual physical exam) is a routine appointment focused on your child’s overall health and development. It typically includes a review of your child’s medical, family, and social history; age-appropriate screenings and immunizations; developmental assessments; physical examination; and preventive health counseling.
A Combined Care visit happens when your child’s clinician addresses and completes more than one type of care during the same appointment. This may include completing a well-child visit during a sick visit, if your child is due, or addressing additional medical concerns during a scheduled well-child visit. Combined Care visits allow families to take care of everything in one visit rather than scheduling a return appointment.
Well-child visits are considered preventive care and are typically covered by insurance at no cost to you. However, when additional concerns or conditions are evaluated and managed during the same visit, insurance plans may apply additional copays, deductibles, or coinsurance based on the patient’s specific benefits. This billing reflects the additional time, medical decision-making, and complexity involved in addressing concerns beyond the preventive exam.
Preventive services typically covered as part of a well-child visit include: a conversation about your child’s medical history (including social and family history), height and weight screening, age-appropriate immunizations (based on your plan’s coverage), developmental and behavioral screenings, routine physical examination, and preventive health counseling such as nutrition and safety guidance.
Additional billing may apply when your child’s clinician evaluates or manages concerns beyond the preventive exam, such as new symptoms (fever, cough, rash, ear pain), chronic or ongoing conditions (asthma, allergies, ADHD), medication concerns or prescription refills, behavioral or mental health evaluations, and certain specialized screenings (autism evaluations, adolescent depression screenings, and similar) that fall outside your plan’s preventive coverage.
Most insurance plans cover the preventive portion of a well-child visit at no cost. However, coverage for additional services to address conditions or concerns varies by plan. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to understand your specific benefits, including any copays, deductibles, or coinsurance that may apply to non-preventive services.
Absolutely. If you prefer to keep your visit focused on only what your child was initially scheduled for, you can let your child’s clinician know. Any additional care can be scheduled as a separate return appointment. However, many families find it more convenient to address everything in one visit rather than making an additional trip to the office. Your clinician will always prioritize your child’s health and safety, so if a concern requires immediate attention, they will discuss this with you.

Sometimes additional services that were already documented and provided during your child’s visit are identified through a post-visit review and billed accordingly.
As documentation is finalized and reviewed, claims may be updated to ensure services provided during the visit are accurately reflected and submitted to the patient’s insurance plan. If you have questions about a specific charge, please contact our billing team by calling 888-776-5252, Option 6.
Virtual telehealth visits
A telehealth visit is a video conference with an MD Kids Pediatrics provider. Based on certain qualifying conditions, your child may be eligible for a telehealth visit in place of an in-office visit.
You can sign up for KidzDocNow by visiting www.kidzdocnow.us or by downloading the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Once you open the app or website, select "Sign Up Now" and follow the prompts to enter information for yourself and your child(ren). Your KidzDocNow account will then be linked to your child(ren)'s medical records, allowing you to request an on-demand telehealth visit and allowing your telehealth provider to access their medical information. You can also call your MD Kids Pediatrics office to schedule a telehealth appointment.
Good news! We do not require appointments for telehealth visits. You can enter the KidzDocNow app and initiate an on-demand visit at any time, day or night, and wait to be seen by the first available provider.
In addition to on-demand telehealth visits (see above), you can also schedule an appointment by calling your MD Kids Pediatrics office or 888-776-5252.
Yes, we can treat many minor illnesses, injuries, and other health concerns virtually. We start by asking specific questions about your child’s medical history, then use the video connection as a tool to observe your child in real time. In many cases, this is enough to make a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. Your online provider also has full access to your child’s medical records and can prescribe medication(s).
If an in-person visit is needed for any reason, we will help you schedule one. Working together as a team, we ensure that your child receives a comprehensive evaluation.
It’s best to conduct telehealth visits in a private, quiet, and well-lit part of your home with a stable internet connection. Turn off any televisions and put pets in another room to minimize distractions. For safety and to ensure the best quality of care, please do not conduct the visit while in a moving vehicle.
You should prepare just like you would for an in-office visit, jotting down any questions or concerns ahead of time. We recommend logging in a few minutes early to resolve any technical issues. Your child (the patient) must be present for the visit. Please also have your child’s medication list and any other pertinent information close by.
Yes, you’ll receive both a text message and an email confirming your child’s appointment details. These reminders help ensure you have everything you need in advance, including the date, time, and instructions for joining the telehealth visit.
Telehealth visits are typically conducted via the KidzDocNow app. Existing patients do not have to pay any fees up front. Your insurance company will be billed first, then you are responsible for any portion the insurance company does not cover. For self-pay patients, a telehealth visit costs $59.
Requests for forms, records, refills & referrals
If your child has not been seen for the condition for which you are requesting a referral, you must schedule an appointment at our office first. If you need a referral for a follow-up visit for a condition your child has already been seen for, you can use the patient portal to make your request. Our office will contact you when your referral is complete, usually within 5-7 business days.
Contact our office and let them know which medication(s) you need refilled, along with the phone number for your pharmacy. You can also request prescription refills on the patient portal.
Parents and requesters can use the patient portal for instant access or VitalChart’s online portal to request medical records. The records are typically ready within 24-48 hours, although certain types of records may take a week or longer. VitalChart provides bilingual customer service to patients and requesters who need help using the request portal, checking their record release status, and more. Paper requests can also be made by downloading and filling out our Medical Records Request Form and bringing it to our office.
Please contact our office with your request. Your form will be completed within 3-5 business days.
Contact the doctor’s office you are transferring from and request that the records be released to the MD Kids Pediatrics office you are moving to.
Patient portal
You can schedule and manage office appointments, access your child’s medical records — including visit summaries, lab results, immunizations, referrals, and prescription refills — and even pay your bill.
You’ll receive an email from MD Kids Pediatrics with a username and password to access the portal with any web browser or the healow™ app. (If you don’t see the email, please check your spam folder.) You can customize your password after your initial login.
Check your inbox for your confirmation email. (If you don’t see the email, please check your spam folder.) In your confirmation email, click on “Set up Portal Account” and follow the steps.
Your practice code is included at the bottom of the welcome email for your portal account.
Yes, all of your information is secure. You are protected by the username and password/PIN number of your choice as well as industry-standard SSL encryption.

Both the patient portal and the healow™ app are free, so you always have convenient access to your child’s medical records and can stay informed about their care.
In the “Appointments” section, click “New Appointment.”
Select the visit reason and your preferred location.
You’ll see a list of providers working at your selected location and the next available appointment.
Select the date and time you prefer and add your appointment details.
A 4-digit verification code will be sent to the phone number listed on your account.
Enter the code, then click “Verify and Book.”
You’ll see your appointment details in the “Dashboard” section of the portal.
In the “’Medical Records” section, click ‘“Lab Diagnostic Report.’’
In the “Medical Records” section, click “Immunization History.” You will have the option to print your child’s medical records here.
In the “Messages” section, click “Refill Requests.” You will see a list of your child’s current medications. Select the medication you need and click “Refill Request.” If no refills are available, we recommend scheduling an appointment in the “Appointments” section.
A proxy account allows a designated individual to access and manage another person's health information. This type of account is typically used by parents or legal guardians accessing their child(ren)'s records.
In adherence with the Cures Act, parents or legal guardians will receive login credentials that allow them to access information for multiple children with a single login.
Please note: Patients are eligible to have access to their own portal account at age 12+, depending on state regulations.
