Q&A with Dr. Wawer-Chubb

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

My favorite animated movie is Beauty and the Beast.

What is your favorite children's book?

I loved reading the Good Night series books with my kids. We would buy them from any place we visited, where family lived or giftshops when we saw them. Made for fun night-time reading!

What was your favorite childhood toy?

My favorite childhood toys were Play-Doh and puzzles.

Who is your greatest inspiration?

Any parent who has more than 2 kids! I have 2 boys who were born 19 months apart and didn't want to repeat the chaos! Kudos to those that do!

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Cooking & baking, traveling, wine tasting, Zumba, Pilates, Mahjong, beach vacations and visiting family & friends on the East Coast

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

I've wanted to be a pediatrician since I was in Kindergarten! I had 2 lovely male doctors growing up in NJ and then a woman, Dr. Mullick, joined them as I was older. I was lucky enough to work in her office in high school/college and got a bird's eye view of outpatient pediatrics. Pediatrics always seemed to fit my personality as I did my medical school rotations even though I gave other specialties a chance. I definitely had some of the best mentors during residency!

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

I love meeting new people and always try to find something in common to connect with--sports teams, hobbies, growing up outside of El Paso, etc. I am fairly laid back and try to offer a calming perspective to my families. Over time, they will know that I'd don't worry about much, but when I do I'll let them know! I try to make sure the patients and families are comfortable with our "game plan" before leaving the office and know they can always call back for concerns/questions.

I enjoy all types of office procedures--laceration repairs, I&Ds, ear piercing and wart removals to name a few.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

I offer a calming demeanor and hands-off approach to my patients with special needs, such as autism, anxiety, developmental delays, etc. I try to work up to what the child will allow each visit and build on that for next time. I've had success with this and see progress with patients over time!
