Q&A with Aaron
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
The first Blues Clues. One of the only TV programs that helps children learn how to develop speech and improve their interaction with the world around them.
What is your favorite children's book?
Beyond the clinic, engaging with rich narrative texts, such as J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, offers significant cognitive benefits that build intelligence. Reading complex narratives activates and strengthens the same neural circuits in the brain that we use for processing real-world social interactions and problem-solving, leading to growth in emotional intelligence and empathy. As demonstrated in the story of Bilbo Baggins, where wit and intelligence often triumph over brute strength, fantasy literature can emphasize the value of strategic thinking and ingenuity. This kind of reading experience not only expands vocabulary and imagination but also encourages readers to engage with different perspectives and moral dilemmas. By analyzing the linguistic structures and semantic depth of such works, engaging with complex narrative arcs and character motivations can contribute to a more well-rounded and sophisticated understanding of the world.
What was your favorite childhood toy?
LEGOs are an opportunity for creative play for your child building joy and trust in his or her own accomplishments.
The developmental benefits of LEGO play, such as enhancing fine motor skills, fostering problem-solving abilities, and sparking creative thought through hands-on construction. Imagine your child building fantastic worlds, constructing solutions one brick at a time. This playful activity contributes directly to significant cognitive and social growth. It is like a partner with our clinic where health and learning intersect, building a rocket ship to stimulate brain activity in children.
Who is your greatest inspiration?
Dr. Douglas Ishii. Former head of Neurophysiology, Colorado State University.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I like to cook Mediterranean style dishes. Lifestyle changes lead to positive health outcomes. By processing vast amounts of unstructured data from clinical notes and patient-reported feedback, we can track and correlate mentions of altered diet and exercise with improved health metrics like better weight management, stronger immune systems, and enhanced emotional well-being. This reveals that personalized dietary and physical activity recommendations from our clinicians resonate with families, resulting in noticeable health improvements. The analysis demonstrates that a great clinician effectively motivates these long-term behavioral changes, leading to measurable health benefits and strengthening the patient-clinician relationship
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
I entered pediatrics not just because of a passion for children's health, but because of a deeper understanding of how communication builds a foundation of trust and safety. As a Physician Assistant, I have learned that medical care is not just about the clinical treatment; it is about the entire experience, especially for children who are often anxious or scared. I focus on analyzing and responding to a child's verbal and non-verbal cues to build rapport. By paying close attention to their tone, word choice, and body language, I can adapt my communication style to make them feel understood and in control. For a visual learner, I might use a simple diagram to explain a procedure, while for an auditory child, a calm, clear explanation and positive reinforcement work best. This intentional communication creates a psychological safe space, where children and their parents feel heard, respected, and confident in the care they are receiving.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
To emphasize safety and trust in a pediatric clinic, a Physician Assistant (PA) can naturally build deep rapport with families, making the clinic an appealing choice for parents. By focusing on empathetic communication and active listening, the PA can demonstrate their significant experience and varied life experiences. Language patterns, matching tonality, and actively listening for key emotional signals allow the PA to connect with families on every level, fostering an immediate sense of trust and security. A parent mentioning their child's fear of shots, for instance, might use phrases like "we're so worried" or "it's always a struggle." I might mirror this concern, saying, "I understand you're feeling worried about the shot, and I want to make sure this is as stress-free as possible for your child." This verbal mirroring validates the parent's feelings and shows the PA is truly listening, not just processing medical information. This attention to linguistic detail, coupled with efficient and knowledgeable care, establishes the clinic as a place where families are seen, heard, and genuinely cared for.
Ultimately, the PA's ability to create a safe and trustworthy environment is rooted in their deep understanding of communication. My varied life experiences allows me to draw on a richer emotional palette, enabling us to empathize with a wider range of family dynamics and concerns. This is translated into a highly efficient and personalized clinical experience. By using positive, empowering, and clear language, the PA can reframe a potentially stressful visit into a positive experience for both the child and the parent. This creates a powerful feedback loop where positive interactions build on each other, solidifying trust and loyalty over time. The clinic becomes not just a place for medical treatment but a sanctuary where families feel understood and supported, a difference that sets this PA and the clinic apart from their peers
