Q&A with Dr. Rymer
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
My favorite Disney movie would have to be Beauty and the Beast. Currently my favorite animated show to watch with my kids is Bluey. I frequently find myself still sitting there watching when my kids have run off to do something else!
What is your favorite children's book?
My favorite children's book is "The Kissing Hand". It is a sweet story about parents loving their children and helping them take those first few steps out into the world. Makes me tear up every time!
What was your favorite childhood toy?
My favorite toy as a child was my bike. I would ride it all afternoon and have races with friends around the neighborhood. But I always wore my helmet, and you should too!
Who is your greatest inspiration?
My greatest inspiration is my family. Through hard times and easy times, they keep me going and remind me what is important in this life.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Spending time with my family, taking trips (especially to disneyland!), working out and cooking new recipes.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
When I started medical school, I was not sure what area of medicine I wanted to practice. But when I did my first pediatric rotation, I was blown away by the patients, their families and the impact I could have on people's lives. Children are resilient and naturally possess such a joy and happiness. I love what I do and I feel honored that parents place their trust in me to help keep their children healthy.
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I do my very best to make sure my patients and their families feel listened to. Often times, office visits can feel chaotic or rushed and I try to make sure that the time I spend in the exam room is focused on what is concerning the patient and parent.
How do you accommodate patients with special needs?
We try our best to help accommodate patients with various needs and abilities. If sitting in a crowded waiting room is too overwhelming, we can try to place in an open room quickly or have parents wait outside or in their cars until the patient is ready to be taken back. Our staff take their time when doing vitals or procedures and if they can tell a patient is having a hard time, will often take a break or check with the caregiver to decide whether to proceed or not. Some kids do not like getting vitals taken and if we can skip that day, we will.
